BRIDGING THE ZAMBESI
COMMUNICATION WITH AFRICAN COAST. (British Official Wireless.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) Rugby, October 17. Contracts were signed to-day for the'construction by the Cleveland Engineering Co., Ltd., of a bridge across the Zambesi, and some 25 miles of railway on the south bank of the river, to connect the existing lines of the trans-Zambesi railway and Central Africa railway. The total contract price is £1,434,000, and the work 'is expected to take at least three years to complete. It will provide direct communication between Nyasaland and the Port of Beira. The extension of the railway is io tap Lake Nyasa which has hitherto been without a railway. Communication to the coast is also being' begun by the new company formed to carry out these schemes. In addition the Government of Nyasaland is undertaking the. improvement of the roads of the Protectorate and of, the steamshipservices on Lake Nyasa. The total 'cost of all these enterprises, including the construction of the bridge and approach railway, is expected to amount to about £3,250,000.
