WHALING INDUSTRY

DEVELOPMENT BY NEW ZEALAND. STATE LOTTERY SUGGESTED. - (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, September 22. foreign exploitation of the whaling industry in the Antarctic prompted Mr W. Galloway, when speaking at the annual smoke concert of the New Zealand Institute of Marine and Power Engineers, to urge that New Zealanders should take up the work. He suggested that a State lottery should be set up to raise funds for the establishment of a company to develop the whaling industry. “To me it is disturbing to see New Zealand goods carried by ships flying a foreign flag,” he said. “Recently there left our harbour a fleet of whale chasers. Their flag was not that of Britain, and, as far as I am aware, none of the seamen were British. Here is a great fortune leaving our shores annually. Here are the fruits of one of bur most promising industries gathered by foreigners. I suggest the introduction of a State lottery, the proceeds of which should go to bring into being a State company. Let us use the sporting instincts of our people to open and develop new industries.”
