TENNIS

KENNINGTON CLUB. The annual meeting of the Kennington Tennis Club was held on September 27. Mr D. F. Leckie presided over a fair attendance of members.

The annual report states that the past season had been a most successful one, an enthusiastic and large membership being mainly responsible for this, lhe club s finances were in a very satisfactory condition, the credit balance on the year’s working being £27 16/-. This would assist materially in liquidating the debt to the Southland Amateur Sports Trust, to which the club still owed £4O of the original £lOO loan. With a little extra effort on the part of the incoming executive and the members generally and a liberal response to the subscription* list now in circulation, the committee trusted that this debt would be cleared. The grounds committee proposed as soon as funds were available to complete the construction of the pavilion and to asphalt the back-lines of both courts. The club’s affiliation with the Southland Lawn Tennis Association proved to be a wise step. The “A” team which took part in the “B” grade competition, finished in fourth place out of ten teams, which was very creditable indeed, considering the strength of the three leading teams. Of the 15 matches played by the A team, 11 were won and four lost. The Kennington "B” team again had a most successful year, winning eight and losing only one of the nine friendly matches played. Those players from the “B” team who played in competition matches showed splendid form and benefited greatly by the experience they gained. The membership stood at 31, the slight decrease over the previous year being occasioned mainly from departures from the district. The club extended its heartiest congratulations to Miss V. Rose on her being its first player to achieve Southland representative honours. Also to Miss Rose and Mrs Fox and Mr W. Swale on their being selected to represent Town against the Central SubAssociation. Through her marriage and departure from Southland the club regretted losing the services of Mrs I. Ward (nee Miss Rose). The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mr D. F. Leckie; vicepresidents, Mrs Fox, Mr G. T. Matheson; secretary and treasurer, Mrs S. J. Henderson; assistant secretary, Mr J. Alexander; club captain, Mr S. J. Henderson; deputy club captain, Mr J. Alexander; auditor, Mr J. Orr; press representative, Mr J. McLew; general committee, Misses E. Henderson, N. McLew, H. Lyall, R. Graham, Messrs R. Henderson, A. Hillis, T. Lyall, W. Henderson and G. White.

Mr W. Swale was elected delegate for the Southland Association.

Opening day was fixed for October 5, a Yankee tournament to take place. Mr L. Border was appointed handicapper.

It was decided to enter a team for the B Grade competition.
