VESUVIUS QUIETER

MAIN CRATER SEA OF FIRE.

LAVA THREATENS VILLAGE.

Naples, June 5

After severe paroxysms early this morning Vesuvius has calmed down considerably. The outflow of lava has decreased; also the rate of progress of the streams descending the mountainside. Three streams threaten Tersigno. There were heartrending scenes as the long procession of motor lorries took up grieving men and sobbing women with their scanty allowances of household goods to safer quarters. An official statement declared that it is calculated that the fire columns are 1500 feet high, and that the entire floor of the main crater has become a sea of fire.— Australian Press Association-United Service.
