DEATH OF NATIVE
AFRICAN FARMER S GUILT.
SUSPENSION OF SENTENCE.
Cape Town, April 17.
Strenuous efforts are being made to avoid the infliction of lashes on the Jewish farmer who was convicted of culpable homicide in connection with the death of a native. Application was made to-day to the judge who tried the case for a suspension pending an appeal on the ground that a special entry was not made of the jury's recommendation to mercy. The judge first refused, but subsequentlv suspended sentence for a fortnight pending an application to the Appellate Division.—Australian Press Association.
