CHINESE FAMINE
NEW ZEALAND’S ASSISTANCE.
APPRECIATION FROM THE EAST.
(Per United Press Association.)
Wellington, April 18.
The Mayor of Wellington, Mr G. A. Troup, to-day cabled £6OO to the International Relief Fund Commission in Shanghai as the first instalment of money raised in the Dominion for the relief of the starving millions in the provinces of Honan, Shenshi and Kansu.
The latest official news received from China by the Mayor is as follows: “China greatly appreciates New Zealand's co-opera-tion in the matter of relief. The conditions are the worst for 50 years. Millions are eating leaves, bark, grass, and seeds, and thousands are dying. No crop is possible in most of the areas till September. Funds are very inadequate. An international effort is required to prevent a disastrous loss of life.”
