Mr J. K. Simpson has been re-elected Mayor of Lawrence. He was unopposed.

The appointment of Mr W. H. Woodward as Stipendiary Magistrate has been Gazetted, states a Wellington telegram. Mr A. H. Mackrell returned to Invercargill by’ the express last night from a brief business visit to Dunedin.

Mr J. Brown, staff superintendent of the New Zealand railways, who is making a departmental tour of New Zealand, is at present in Invercargill.

Private advice received at Gore states that there is a possibility of the Leader of the Opposition, Mr J. G. Coates, paying a visit to Gore in May. Mr J. Pickard, railway district traffic manager for Southland, returned to Invercargill by’ the express last night from Christchurch, where he has been on a visit on departmental business. At the Land Board meeting yesterday’ the Commissioner (Mr N. C. Kensington) welcomed Mr L. A. Niederer, who took his seat on the board for the first time. Mr Niederer suitably’ replied. Messrs Thomas McFarlane, John Neill and Joseph Paterson from Scotland, who spent the week-end with Mr John King (Woodside) left by’ the mid-day express on Monday for an extended holiday in the north. Mr C. R. Foster, of Thornbury, has been nominated for the seat on the directorate of the New Zealand Producers’ Co-operative Marketing Association, Ltd., rendered vacant by the retirement of Mr H. J. Middleton.

Mr C. E. Barnes, business agent for the New Zealand railways in the South Island, who has been visiting Invercargill in connection with the arrangements to be made for the farmers’ excursion to the North Island, returned north by the express last evening.

Mr L. C. Webb, formerly sub-editor of the Southland Times and at present on the literary’ staff of the Christchurch Press and a lecturer in history’ at Canterbury’ College, has been awarded a very valuable research scholarship in history. He will leave for Cambridge University’ in the course of a month or so.
