VAGRANT VERSE

DROUGHT. (Written for the Southland Times.) On the highest peak I have set my dream, where no soft-tongued scheme will its stronghold seek, neither furtive creek nor impotent stream. What the mountains hold they will never know. As much for my foe as for me their mould. Like me they grow old and are streaked with snow. There my dream will remain while my hopes are dry; yet even so high, with fulfilling rain will be dreamless again the mountains, not I. —Brunnhilde. Invercargill, November 2, 1928.
