INVERCARGILL SEAT

REFORM PARTY PROPOSALS. MR. S. M. MACALISTER TO BE APPROACHED. The Invercargill branch of the Reform Party has decided to approach Mr. S. M. Macalister to accept nomination as a candidate for the Invercargill electorate in the coming general election. Mr. Macalister, who was born in Invercargill in 1889, a son of the late C. H. Macalister, who was well-known as a successful chemist, was educated at the South School and later went to the Southland Boys’ High School. Matriculating at an early age, he took employment with the National Mortgage and Agency Company until he was old enough to enter the university. Then he studied law at Victoria College, Wellington, graduating with the degree of LL.B., and was admitted as a barrister and solicitor in 1912. He joined the firm of Macalister Bros, in Invercargill and remained in practice here until the Great War. He saw service from 1916 to 1919 in France, Egypt, India and Mesopotamia. On his return to Invercargill he resumed his legal practice. In 1921 he was elected to the Invercargill Borough Council, but in 1925 he retired. Two years later he was requested to stand again and was returned to the Council with a big vote. As chairman of the Finance Committee of the Council from 1923 to 1925 he gave the borough distinguished service and when he rejoined the Council in 1927 he was at once put at the head of that important committee again. Mr. Macalister is a past president of the Southland District Law Society, a member of the executive of the Southland League, associate vice-president of the R.S.A., and president of the Southland High School Old Boys’ Association.
