VESSEL DELAYED

KANNA HELD UP TROUBLE WITH STOKEHOLD CREW MEN PAID OFF (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, June 26. Trouble with several members of the stokehold crew of the Union Company’s cargo steamer Kanna resulted in the vessel being held up at Dunedin last night.

It is stated that there was some hitch between certain members of the stokehold crew and ship’s officers while the Kanna was at Bluff last week.

The Kanna arrived at Dunedin on Sunday morning and was ready to sail last night for Napier and Gisborne via ports, but it is stated that a number of the stokehold hands refused to accompany the ship because they had been “logged” for some alleged offence said to have been committed at Bluff. Late last night all the members of the Kanna’s crew were given 24 hours’ notice of the termination of their services.

The men concerned in the dispute held several conferences with the Union Company officials to-day but no settlement was reached, the men stating that they had no desire to retain their berths.

The Union Company then decided to pay off the stokehold section of the crew and this was carried into effect during the afternoon.

An effort will be made to secure the necessary men to fill the vacancies to-mor-row morning, and if no further hitch occurs the Kanna will be despatched on her northern trip to-morrow.
