ANGLING LICENSES
"PRIVILEGE OF THE WEALTHY.” AN ERRONEOUS IMPRESSION. (Per United Press Association.) Wellington, June 14. The Taupo Anglers’ Association recently protested against a proposal said to emanate from the Government to abolish the present short-period licenses, but the Hon. R. F. Bollard says the Government has no such intention. He also referred to a statement credited to an American visitor that the finest fishing in America was the sole privilege of the wealthy and that New Zealand was heading in the same direction. This also was erroneous. The primary object of the negotiations with the natives and others concerned was to prevent such a state of affairs. Mr Bollard added that requests had been received to prohibit trawling within 300 yards of any part of the shores of Lake Taupo, but he could not agree except possibly at the mouth of streams, especially the Tongariro and Waitahanui.
