HOT MIX PLANT
LENGTHY DISCUSSION SUPPORT FOR DOMINION’S GOODS NEW ZEALAND TENDER ACCEPTED. (Per United Press Association.) Gisborne, June 15. In connection with road construction work for the Borough tenders were invited by the Borough Council for 400 yards of hot mix (bilumen) and an asphalt plant. A lengthy discussion ensued at the council meeting to-night. At a previous meeting the borough engineer recommended the acceptance of the Neuchatel Company’s, Iroquois, plant at £4218 16/-, the only other tender worth considering, he said, being Niven and Company’s at £3087 10/-. A letter w r as read from the Minister of Customs in reply to a request for a remission of duty on a hot mix plant if imported. The Minister stated that such plants are made in New Zealand and give satisfaction to local users, and under those circumstances he could not admit an imported plant free of duty. Finally it was decided by seven votes to two to accept Niven’s tender, the mover, Mr C. R. Decosta, making a strong appeal to support New Zealand made goods.
