ASSAULT ON REFEREE

At the conclusion of the League football match yesterday a wild demonstration occurred among members in the pavilion. The referee, T. McMahon was assaulted. The trouble followed the ordering off of the Australian forward, Potter, allegedly for striking an opponent. When the referee left the field he was mobbed and a free fight was narrowly averted. Potter and Bacon, the English three-quarters, went to the referee’s assistance, and, with the arrival of a squad, of police, the trouble cooled off.
