RAILWAY OFFICERS

ANNUAL INSTITUTE CONFERENCE. (Per United Press Association). WELLINGTON, June 23. At the annual conference of the Railway Officers’ Institute it was decided to again press for the setting up of a permanent tribunal for the purpose of settling disputes, etc., on the lines of the Board which adjudicated after the 1920 strike. A Dunedin remit for claims and the delivery of lectures, where desired by members, country members to be given every facility in order that they may attend, was agreed to. A Wellington proposal that railway officers should receive similar treatment to that enjoyed by officers of other State Department in connection with staff reports of controlling officers received unanimous support, and it was decided to also agree to a remit from the Executive Committee that the Department be requested to notify the staff of the qualifications necessary for advancement from grade to grade, and to higher positions in district offices. It was resolved that as railway work was so widely different from the classes of work controlled by other State Departments, the Railway Department should not come within the scope of the Uniformity Committee.

Upwards of 20 other remits of minor im portance were considered and dealt with.
