HEROIC CARDINAL

MERCIER’S GOLDEN JUBILEE. KING ALBERT PRESENT. Thousands of persons from Brussels, Antwerp, and other parts of Belgium gathered in the little medieval town of Malines on May 12 to attend the celebration of the golden jubilee of Cardinal Mercier, Primate of Belgium. A great concourse at an early hour this morning surrounded the Cardinal’s palace, and the Archbishopric Cathedral of St. Rombaut. The cortage of bishops and priests proceeded from the Cardinal’s palace to the cathedral, where the Cardinal donned the sacerdotal habits before the altar and then proceeded to the main entrance to welcome King Albert and Queen Marie, the entire royal family having wished to honour the prelate by attending the ceremony in a body. The King joined with the congregation in the Te Deiun.
