AMERICAN PROHIBITION

SUPREME COURT’S RULING INCONVENIENCE TO SHIPPING MAY BENEFIT CANADIAN PORTS. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, May 2. • (Received May 2, 7.15 p.m.) Th? decision of the United States that ;no liquor will be permitted within the i three mile limit, is regarded in British ship- ' ping circles as fraught with grave coni sequences among which is suggested the I greater us? of Canadian ports by the big i transatlantic lineys. The opinion in Southhampton is that the only course open for I foreign vessels is to dump liquor stocks ■ outside the three mile limit, but it is stated j that this measure would be most inconven- | ient. The decision will inevitably disturb j the whole ocean passenger service between ; Europe and the United States. I It is expected that the Majestic will leave , Southampton on Thursday with the usual I supply. It is stated that the Majestic require? for a round voyage 80,000 bottle-* of ale and stout and 15,000 pints of champagne and 10,000 pints of other winos, 4000 bottles of whisky and other spirits, and 3000 bottles of liqueurs. Liverpool strongly resents the American decision and favours calling on outward and inward voyages at convenient Canadian ports to discharge and reload the usual liquor supply. Other suggestions in shipping quarters are to transfer liquor outside the limit to liners returning or run westward with only sufficient for the outward journey returning dry, but the difficulties would arise regarding the transfer in bad weather, while there is the objection on the ground of lost time and expense in calling at a Canadian port. Meantime Government circles await official information of the decision.
