ITALIAN FLOOD DISASTER. FIVE THOUSAND FAMILIES HOMELESS. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) ROME, May 7. The collapse of Corato disclosed an extraordinary story of the human vicissitude. The town rapidly progressed from a tiny village to an important industrial and commercial centre. The buildings were among the finest in Italy. The soil of the site was clay and sand. Torrential rain fell after a nine month’s drought and water accumulated in a fissure in the earth and filtered through under the foundations, which collapsed. The first building to fall was the magnificent new Church of the Made an a. Five thousand farailies are sleeping in tents and huts in the open and suffering bravely. The Government has sent troops, workmen and material to erect temporary aheltere. The preliminary vote of nine millions lire is exhausted and another fifty millions will be necessaryViolent storms are increasing the sufferings of the homeless who are panic striken.
