REASON FOR AMERICAN OCCUPATION. GERMAN DESIGNS. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) WASHINGTON, May 8. (Received May 8, 9.30 p.m.) Mr Lansing sent a letter to the Senate Committee which, considering Haiti affairs, stating that the United States’ occupation of Haiti was due largely to Germany’s attitude. Germany appeared to be ready in 1913-14 to go to great lengths to secure exclusive customs control and a coaling station there under the pretext of Haiti’s financial instability.
