THE CHANCELLOR’S ADDRESS. (Per United Press Association.) DUNEDIN, January 16. The Senate of the University of New Zea-‘ land opened to-day when the Chancellor j (Sir Robert Stout) pave an address. He. said the number of students at the University last year was necessarily affected by the war, but it was amazing how soon the younger men and women marched forward to the university and colleges. The number of candidates this year for the entrance examination was 1914, against 1710 last year, but there was a falling off in the number of candidates for degree examinations. The respective numbers were 1293 in 1916. against 1185 in 1017. During the year 191617 there were twenty-one applications for 10 vacancies at the Royal Military I College at Duntroon and of these fourteen j qualified. The men who obtained the highest marks gained admission. That New j Zealand students took no second place the results show. One hundred and fifteen Australians and twenty-five New Zealanders were com missioned for active service to June 30, 1916. Of those who obtained firstclass twenty-seven were Australian and eight New Zealanders, or not quite 24 per cent, to 32 per cent, of New Zealanders. IMPORTANT PROPOSALS. • DUNEDIN, January 16. At the sittings of the University Senate to day Dr Collins gave notire of morion that the New Zealand University establish a research scholarship, open to the medical profession in New Zealand, on the subiect of cancer and allied malignant diseases, terms and conditions to be referred to the Medical Committee of Senate. A proposal from Canterbury College for the establishment of an honours course in education, was referred to the Degrees and Commerce Committee, Mr Adams being added t.*i the committee. The question of the appointment of demonstrators to encourage research as suggested by the Chancellor was referred to the Science Committee, to whom was also | referred a report of the committee of the I New Zealand Institute on research and inj duslry.
