AREA AVAILABLE. In the annual report of the Lands Department it is estimated that a total area of 547,359 acres, comprising 1796 holdings, will be available for selection during the coming year. As the Rotorua express approached Manurewa this morning a porter on the station discovered the body of a man on the cowcatcher. It has been proved to be the body of a soldier belonging to the 29th Reinforcements, but so far it has not been identified. The body was terribly mutilated, and death must have been instantaneous. IDENTITY OF DECEASED. I AUCKLAND, August 8. The soldier killed at Marurewa was Joseph Cartwright, of Paparoa, north of Auckland. TWO MEN KILLED. AUCKLAND, August 8. It is reported from Taumarunui that two men, John Maloney, single, and Frederick Baddelly, married, employed by the Public Works Department, were killed through a fall of papa rock at Ohahu tunnel, Ohahukuru, this afternoon. Baddelly was killed instantaneously, but Maloney, who was crushed in the chest, walked with assistance to the entrance, when he expired. Two other men. nearby, escaped injury.
