■ . ■ NEW TAXATION PROPOSALS. SPECIAL TAX ON ELIGIBLES. TO BE DEVOTED TO REPATRIATION. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) MELBOURNE, August 8. Received August 9, 12.5 a.m. The Federal Treasurer has announced his new taxation proposal', including an additional income tax of 10 per cent., with a minimum of £lO each in the case of widowers without children and unenlisted single men between the ages of 21 and 45. This tax is expected to produce £500,000 in the present year, which will be devoted to the repatriation of soldiers. The war time profits tax is estimated to yield £1,000,000 for the two years 1915-17. The Federal receipts for the current year arc estimated at £37,283,832, and the expenditure at £37,283,832, out of which £13,109,351 will be devoted to war purposes from revenue. War loans raised, or to he raised, are estimated at £70,253,590, and war expenditure out of loan at £84,051,230. The total war expenditure, including this year’s estimate, is £212,741,509; war pensions £2,637,168; and repatriation £1,000,000. Provision will have to be made for raising £64,065,922 for war purposes. Beyond taxing eligibles there are no additional demands for the present year. HEALTH IN CAMPS OFFICIAL STATISTICS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, August 3. The latest official returns show a marked improvement in the health of the men in the Trentham and Feathers ton camps. The following tables give comparisons of the more important statistical figures indicating the condition and health of the troops in both camps during the first seven months of 1916 and of the present year:— TRENTHAM. 1916. 1917.
