MR HUGHES’ STATEMENT. CALLOUS LABOUR OPPOSITION. (By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright) (Australian & N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, March 7. Mr Hughes, in his statement of the circumstances leading to the dissolution, said that since he asked for an extension of life of Parliament there had arisen grave reason which could only be disclosed to members of the Chamber. This knowledge should make clear the danger that now assailed the Empire. This was the gravest crisis of the war. Referring to Labour opposition, he said: “We have done everything possible to secure unity and follow the lead of Britain and other dominions, but the Opposition will not permit us. -They care nothing for the Empire—they care for nothing except its downfall. In the House Mr Cook stated that the election would be held in seven or eight weeks’ time.
