SOUTHLAND’S GIGANTIC APPEAL

WEDNESDAY, 21st FEBRUARY. The initial patriotic effort for 1917, whereby £IOOO is hoped to be raised for the Red Cross Society and Soldiers' Club was advanced another stage on Tuesday night last when a large and enthusiastic meeting of the combined committees was held in the Council Chambers. Mr T. Crawley occupied the chair, and amongst those present were the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs D. McFarlane). Reports from the various committees were received, and were of a very satisfactory nature. The Caledonian Society recommended and the meeting confirmed the appointment of the following officials :—President, Mr T. Crawley; superintendent of sports, Mr G. McAlpinc; deputy-superintendent of sports, Mr J. Holloway; stewards for floral events, Messrs >S. B. Macdonald, G. C. A. Todd, J. T. Brain, G. Fraser, C. The appointment for judges for the baby show was left in the hands of the Mayoress, Mrs W. Hamilton, and the ladies of the Red Cross Society. It was decided that the wrestling events be in the Cumberland style. It was reported to the meeting that Scrgl.-Major Sutton had consented to give a sword display. Given a fine day this unique gathering should be an unbounded success, and great efforts are being made to have all Government offices and business premises closed the full day, and the committee have every reason to believe that they will be successful in that direction. No more urgent appeal can be made to Soutblanders to do everything in their power to assist in making the gathering on the 21st February a gigantic financial success from a financial and patrioticpoint of view.
