MR CECIL HAZLETT FAREWELLED. On .Saturday evening in Allen’s Hall a smoke concert was hold by the numerous friends of Mr Cecil Hazlett, who has volunteered for the front and who is leaving for Trentham this week. Mr Jules Tapper occupied the chair, and a lengthy toast list was indulged in. The chairman, in proposing the toast of "Our Guest,” said that Mr Cecil Hazlett was known throughout Southland as a true sport ami a jolly good fellow. They all wished him the best of good luck and that he would return safe and sound. Mr A. McNeil, on behalf of those present, asked Mr Hazlett's acceptance of j.an illuminated wristlet watch as a small ! token of appreciation from his many j friends and referred to the line spirit ! and the sense of duty which actuated ! the recipient, and hoped that whenever he looked at the face of the watch it would help to remind him of the many hard but honest dials he was leaving behind in Southland. Messrs T. Price, E. Howorth, G. Woods, G. Munro, .1. Simpson, W. .fenkins, Ronald, King, McGaw, Findlay, Kingsland, Deegan, Ferguson, Gardiner and others also spoke of Mr Hazlett’s many good qualities and as a sport, and all were of the opinion that the Kaiser was in for a rough time of it should ever he drop into the hands of the departing guest. | Mr Hazlett, on taking the Hour to re- ! ply, was enthusiastically cheered. He | thanked the many speakers for their laudatory remarks and the presentation they hail given him. He would never forget his fourteen years residence in Southland, and the many chums he was leaving behind him. He hoped that if spared to return to Southland he would again meet them all and again have some of-the good times he had had with them. I The hearty singing of "For He’s a [Jolly Good Fellow,” and "Auld Lang •isync" brought a most enjoyable and jolly evening to a close.
