IMMIGRATION

POPULATION- FOR AUSTRALIAFEDERAL STATES BUST. By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. LONDON, June SO. In an interview yesterday Mr Hunter, Director of Immigration for New South Wales and Victoria, said that the Victorian shipping commitments were being well filled with desirable classes of emigrants, notwithstanding the continued emigration depression throughout Britain, and that by the end of the year the number of immigrants received by Victoria will have greatly exceeded all previous records. Mr E. Payment, Assistant Superintendent of Immigration for New South Wales, after a personal lour, reports that there are good prospects of obtaining skilled agriculturists in Holland, Belgium, Denmark, and Finland. In Norway and Sweden the Governments were found to be strongly opposed to any emigration propaganda. Mr Hunter is making efforts to send out an increased number of domestics, and is likely to secure a most desirable class of girls from the Continent. The prospects of obtaining settlers with capital for the irrigation areas in New South Wales, Mr Hunter added, were improving. The emigrants selected in Britain for Australia during the first five months of tlie present year, exclusive of those nominated by friends, numbered 4598. of whom 2608 were for Victoria. 1282 for* New South Wales. 166 for Queensland. 404 for West Australia, and 13S for South Australia.
