THE SOUTHLAND COUNTY
PETITIONS FOR PARTITION - . (Special to the Times.) WELLINGTON, July 7. Mr G. .T. Anderson (Mataura) presented to Parliament this afternoon several petitions, all showing, in connections with the proposal to establish a new county comprising the Hokonui. Mataura, Waikaia and a portion of the Oreti ridings of the Southland County, that the Southland County comprises too large an area to he worked to the best advantage: that the ridings of the said county are too large in area, and that therefore the needs of the various ridings cannot he properly attended to and dealt with by the riding members; that various economies can be effected if such new county is considered, and that the severance of the ridings would not prejudicially affect the Southland County. The petitions were referred to the Local Bills Committee.
