The Park Road

I ♦- TO THK KDITOK. Sir, — Since reading the report of the proceedings of the Invercargill Borough Council I have waited to see whether any member of the A venal Council intended to tumble you conoerning one portion of the haul proceedings. I allude to clause li of t lie Works Committee's report. The Avenal Couucil had asked the Invercargill Council to bear their share of the cost of repairing the footpath in Kelvin Road, it being the boundary line between them ; and it is the custom in such cases for each party to contribute their fair share of the cost. In the discussion on the subject Councillor Racside is reported to have said that it was unreasonable to ask Invercargill to bear any of the cost, as Avenal had L.'JOO at fixed deposit, while Invercargill was scarcely able to maintain its own streets. A more illogical, absurd, or childish argument it would be hard to find. What if Avenal hud LSUOU instead of L3OO, has it. to do with Councillor Racside. Avenal was asking for what was right, they were not begging a favour, and as to being unreasonable, I think it is a most reasonable thing for a public body to ask for what is their fright. I should like to call the attention of the said Councillor to another fact, which is that the greater part of the damage done to the path is done by cattle belonging to tenants of the Invercargill Council. In the v inter time it is in a dreadful state at the crossings, the mud from the feet of the cut tie at times lying three or four inches dw|i, and it is painful to see ladies and children picking their way through it. If any one has a right to use the word unreasonable it is the people ol Avenal. — I am, Avenal, Sept. '20th. J
