Invercargill and the Black List

TO THE KDIToR. Sir, — You and others have challenged my figures by assuming that I forgot the large suburban population of Invetcargill and the s;arcity of its suburban public houses. 1 did not forget these two facts, but I knew that in this respect Invercargill was not singular as you suppose it to be. Figures which I can supply if you wish it, and for which I have been compelled to wait, show that in this respect also Dunedin and Christchurch can both bear comparison with InverCirgill. Each has suburbs with one hotel to 3000 people or more. The average in both places is fully equal to yours of one to each 1800 persons. There is no escape from the fact that Invercargill has a long lead of the chief centres of population. lam sincerely sorry that it is so and have drawn the attention, not of outsiders, but of yourselves to the fact. In so writing to those whose friendship I prize I can have no motive but to promote the remedy which lies in their own hands, and which I earnestly hope they will apply,— l am, tc, Frank \V. Isitt. Nelson, 16th Sept.
