.The weather has taken on the aspect of spring, but though we have had some sunshine a continued cold easterly wind has prevented warmth, and there is not yet the springing growth which one expects at this season of the year. - There has been no rain (tor a wonder) I tie ground has dried, and gardeners ace hard at work putting in potatoes and seeds. -Although the spring show is announced for next Wednesday, there is a poor show of spring flowers as yet. The tennis players and' bowlers are shaking off -their hybernation and beginning hx inquire when the annual general meetings of their respective clubs arc going to be held. Shipping lias been brisk. The Ko-w----ftai arrived on Saturday to put out, 800 tons West, Goast. coat. She sailed on Tuesday for Greymouth, where she will load for Wellington. The barquent-ine. Amy Turner, has made good progress in discharging her cargo of oil. She will sail from Bluff for Suva to load copra for San Frascisco. The Waimale has continued to occupy the berth during the week. She will make- Bluff tier last poTt of call, going to Newcastle to coal. The Kolare came in on Wednesday to land cargo from Dunedin. The John is expected daily, and the Navua from Auckland next Wednesday. The Kumaru. which recently arrived at Port Chalmers. is advised to load at Bluff in the near future. . Now that, the seamen's strike in Australia is ended, the Huddard, Parker’s steamers are being recommissioned. and the Westralia is due at Bluff from Sydney on 27th Inst., and is to sail for Melbourne. Considerable anxiety lias been felt at Bluff for the safety of the Carpentaria. which left that port on 22nd June', and had not been reported. Advice has now been received of her safe arrival at London. At the. last meeting of the Borough Council a ratepayer strove to awaken it to the nuisance caused hy the, numerous dogs which frequent the front street and chase cyclists, motorists, and other;.drivers ol‘ vehicles with, vociferous barkings. Thanks to the chairman terminated the proceedings. Mr Colquhoun. who has been appointed organiser for Otago and Southland of the N.Z. Returned Soldiers’ association, paid a visit to Bluff last week, and at- a well-attended meeting of returned soldiers a branch of the association was established at Bluff. Mr V. Valentine was elected President, Mr B. Brooks secretary. and the.se. with Messrs J. McGorhok. R. Spencer. and W. Gardiner, to term an Executive committee. A resident of Bluff awoke at an early hour on Tuesday morning to lino! a strange man in his house. He sent for the police, who arrived and arrested the man on a charge of breaking and entering. He. proved to be a member of the crew of the KowhaL and was brought. up before Mr G. R. George. T.P., on Tuesday, who remanded him until Thursday for further mquiry.
