WOOL SALES.
At the wool sales in Sydney and Melbourne prices are lower. The decline is most noticeable in merinos. In 'Melbourne prices were fully a half-penny lower than last year. The first of the series of wool sales opened in Christchurch on Thursday, when, out of 8118 bales catalogued, 7262 were sold by auction. Advances were made in all classes, more especially fine halfbreds and merinos. Pieces and bellies were much sought after by local scourers, and in several instances brought fully up to the fleece from the same flocks. The scarcity of merino, owing to shearing not being far advrnced, considerably affected the market, and caused a keen demand. Ho large station clips came forward. Strong crossbreds advanced on the closing rates at last year’s sales |fl to Id per lb ; medium do, Id to 2d ; Down cross and medium halfbreds, 2d to 3d ; super halfbred, 3d to 4|d ; naerino, 3d to sd. Merino sold up to 12|d, halfbred to crossbred to longwool to Bd, Downs to lid, pieces and bellies to lOfd, and locks to lOd.
