TOTAL ABSTAINERS PREFERRED BY THE U.S.S. CO.

Great exception was taken to the ffequest presented to the Government by recent Prohibition Councils, that, other things being equal, total abstaining railway men and policemen should be preferred to others for promotion. Of course this was suggested in the interests of the public safety, and it is no doubt in the same interests, as well as for the. benefit of the Company, that the U.S.S. Co. has the following amongst its regulations : *lt is the desire of the Directors that captains and officers should abstain from use of wines, beer and spirits while in port on day of sailing, and while at sea. 4 When promotions are being arranged, preference will be given, other considerations being equal, to those captains and officers who are total abstainers.’
