The battery crushing yielded for the month bullion valued at £7963 from 2520 has been received that the New Zealand and River Plate Lana Mortgage Company, declared a. dividend at the rate of 5 per : cent, for the six months from 31st October, to 30th April# • The residence of Mr Sanford, fruiterer, at Epsom, was burned down early this inorning. S Bessy Deasy, Ponsonby, charged with having in her keeping a child for whom she was paid 7s per week, without having the child or the house registered: under the Infant Life Protection Act, was fined £5 and costs 355, or one month s imprisonment.

GISBORNE, June 7. At the Waiapu licensing meeting today all the applications for renewal were granted but one—an application for a new license to an old house at Waerengaakuri. The application for an old house at Kawakawa was adjourned till next quarterly, meeting. In these cases the licenses lapsed through informality last year, and the bench held that they had no power to grant fresh licenses. WANGANUI, June?. A sad and sudden death occurred last evening when Mr Garland W. R. Woon, a very old resident, fell into the river owing to failure of the heart. Mr Woon was for. 16 years clerk to the Magistrates and District Courts, here, and waa retrenched in 1892. 1 His eldest son was the late Rev. W. Woon, Wesleyan Methodist missionary at Tonga and the Friendly Islands. Deceased was the founder of the first newspaper in New Plymouth. GISBORNE, June 7. ■ A labourer named Henry Exworthy has been missing for a fortnight, and is supposed to have been drowned in crossing the river on the banks of which his horse saddled was found.. A cottage owned by the Auckland Education Board, and occupied by Mr Edwin White, has been destroyed by fire. WELLINGTON, June 7. The Gear Meat Company declared a dividend for the half-year at the rate of 10 per cent, per annum. ; The Post's Havelock correspondent wires that King Solomon’s Bullerville mine is again on heavy gold. Over lOOozs were picked up in the last two days, and the miners are still on the metal. ,

The Hon. Mr Ward left England for Canada on Saturday last, and is expected to leave Vancouver for Auckland on the 16th inst. . OHRISTOH [TECH, June 7. The enquiry with reference to the management of the Christchurch Hospital commenced to-day before Dr Giles, Commissioner. About 50 people were present and several counsel were engaged on behalf of individuals and associations. Lengthy argument took place as to the scope of the enquiry, and whether the - Commissioner was authorised to subpoena witnesses. The Commissioner replied that he had that authority* Counsel for the associations saidthatdhe petitions sent in were not charges but merely .matters for investigation. Dr. Giles said that for the purposes of the enquiry he looked upon them in the light of charges against those responsible for the administration of the hospital. After certain preliminaries had been arranged the enquiry was adjourned till Monday. The Premier arrived from the West Coast this evening, and to-morrow will receive adeputation regarding the-un-employed,. i‘He will probably leave for Wellington at night. > Mr A. J. White, one of the best known business men in Christchurch, died early this morning, after a protracted illness. _ DUNEDIN, June 7. The winter show was brought to a close to-night, when there' was a large attendance, and it is understood the Agricultural and Pastoral Association will have a substantial surplus. : The challenge shields for the best managed farms, and the McNairn and Nimmo and Blair cups for cheese and butter, were presented to the winners;
