THE PREMIER AT CHRISTCHURCH. (By Telegraph.) CHRISTCHURCH. June 8. A deputation of representatives from local bodies waited on the Premier today in respect to the unemployed question. After their object had been stated by the Mayor of Christchurch, Mr .Seddon said it was for those present to state what was proposed to be done, and he would give the mind of the Government on the matter. Nearly all the members of the deputation spoke, suggesting what they thought w'ould relieve the distress, after which Mr Seddon made a long reply in the course of which he staled that the local bodies had a duty to perform in assisting the unemployed, else why did they accept subsidies on their rates and charitable aid contributions, etc. So far as the law allowed and the finances permitted, the Government would do its best, as it had been doing, in its cooperative works alternative system, and the purchase of private and native lands, etc.
