THE VICTORIA AMATEUR TURF CLUB MEETING.

THE GUINEAS DAV

(Per Electric Telegraph—Copyright.)

(Per Press association.)

(Received 9.30 p m., October 12th.) Melbourne, Oct. 11.

For the opening day of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club meeting the weather was threatening, and light showers fell before the race for the Guineas started, but despite this there was a splendid attendance, and it was estimated that fully 15,000 were present, including His Excellency the Governor and suite. The proceedings opened disastrously for backers, the majority of whom looked upon Megaphone in the light of a “ dead bird ” for the Caulfield Stakes, but he did not get a place. Mr Samuel Cook’s colt The Admiral received ia fair amount of support for this race, which needs little description, as the favourite collapsed half way up the straight and Tom Hales landed the speedy son of Richmond a winner by a clear length. The Hurdles fell an easy victory to Mr S. Millar’s Pingara, though Ulysses could have been closer up had ha been persevered with. The Great Foal Stakes - was ruined owing to the wretched start, and Lord Hopetoun, who was first away on the fall of the flag, was never headed, and won with ridiculous ease. The Guineas caused a good deal of excitement, and the weight of Mr Brodribb’s money kept Titan first favourite at even money. Notwithstanding this the Ballarat division deemed Annesley a real good thing, and

in consequence of Power being up, Mr Bailey’s colt met with a good deal of j support. After his brilliant victory in the Caulfield Stakes The Admiral advanced' to 2 to I for the Victorian Racing Club’s | Derby. • The following are the results : 5 Caulfield Stakes ; weight for age ; 1 mile 1 furlong. Whimbrel and Beverley led for a couple of furlongs, with Prelude fully a dozen lengths in the rear. Half a mile from home the latter made up ground in a marvellous fashion and joined the field. Here Titan made a forward movement, but on entering the straight both Beverley and Prelude headed him, when Annesley came with a wet sail, and, smothering the field, won all out by two lengths.
