(Pke Electric Telegraph—CoPVßiairr.) (Per Press Association.) (Received 1.30 p.m., May 22nd.) “JACK THE RIPPER.” Melbourne, May 22. The polica have received a letter signed “Jack the Ripper,” apprising them of his arrival in Australia, and announcing his intention of entering upon a career of crime here similar to his performance in London and the West Indies. The writer concludes by telling them to catch him if they can. The police believe the letter to be a hoax, but precautionary measures have been taken in view of possibilities.
AUSTRALIAN PRODUCE MARKETS. Sydney, May 22. The wheat market is glutted. Chick feed 3s Gd ; N.Z. milling, 4s Gd to 4s Bd, nominal. Flour, N.Z. stone-made, £lO 10s to £ll ; roller-made, £ll 5a to £lllss. The oatmeal market is also glutted. Heavy feed, 2s 9d to 3s 2d ; seed, 3s sd. There is a plentiful supply of maize at 2s 9d to 3s 2d, and the market is declining.
Barley, Capo, 3s; market is dull. There is steady demand for bran at Is Id ; pollard la 2d to Is 2M. Potatoes, New Zealand, £4 10s; Tasmanian, £4 17s Gd ; Circular Heads, £5 2s Gd.
Onions, beat New Zealand,are scarce at £ls to £IG.
The butter market la glutted with inferior qualities and only the best quality is saleable. Separator made, Is to Is Id ; dairy made, 8d to lOd. The cheeaejmarket is dull, and there is a plentiful supply of local manufacture at 6dto
Bacon is scarce at 10d, and haras are in demand at to Is.
Melbourne, May 22. The wheat market is strong, and prices range up to 5s Bd. Flour, stone-made, £ll 10s ; roller brands, £l2, with an upward tendency. Qats are improved, 3s 10|d. Barley, feed, 3s 7d ; malting, 3a Cd. Maize, 4s 4d to 4a 4id. Bran, la 3d.
Adelaide, May 22. Wheat, farmers’ lots, 4s 10d ; shipping parcels, 5s o|d at Port Adelaide. Flour, stone, £l4 ; toiler £l2. Bran, Is, firm. Bollard, Is Id. Oats, New Zealand, 4a 4d, Barley, malting, 4s 31 to 4a Gd. New Zealand oatmeal iu 7lb bags is sold at £3lloa per ton, Holders of Mauritius best white sugars ask £29.
