(By Telegraph.) AUCKLAND, April 15. Mr Justice Gillies to-day refused to grant a discharge from bankruptcy to W. Simpson, formerly landlord of the Queen’s Ferry Hotel, on the ground that his failure was attributable to hazardous and rash speculations at a lime when he knew he was not in a position to meet his just liabilities. THAMES, April 15. Mining matters have shown considerable improvement lately, and during the past month 3500 ozs of gold have been obtained ' from the various districts. This afternoon the manager of the Saxon Gold Mining mine banked the handsome return of 549 ozs of gold from 352 loads of quartz and 70 lbs of picked specimens, which is one of the best yields ever obtained from this mine, and is the result of only a fortnight’s operations. NAPIER, April 15. A meeting of subscribing Freemasons was held this evening in the Masonic Hall in connection with the movement for the formation of a Grand Lodge of New Zealand. Letters were read from the Abercorn, Waipawa, and Bedford Lodges, stating that those lodges had passed resolutions in favour of the movement. P.M. Bro. Price moved —“ That this meeting is of opinion that the time is approaching when a United Grand Lodge of Now Zealand be established. It is advisable to join in the movement, and give it every support.” An amendment moved by Bro. Pirani—“That in the opinion of this meeting it is not at present advisable to form a United Grand Lodge of Now Zealand,” was negatived by 9 to 6, and the original motion carried by the same numbers. A motion by Bro. Saunders, Master of the Victoria Lodge —“ that prior to the establishment of a Grand Lodge of New Zealand, a plebiscite be taken of all subscribed masons,” was negatived. Mr Daniel Balharry, at one time manager of the New Shipping Company hero, but lately agent for the United and Imperial Insurance Company, was found in Tutakari River, near Redclyffe bridge, this afternoon. His neck was broken. On the bridge were his horse, coat, hat, and watch. The appearances leave no doubt of suicide. He jumped thirty feet into shallow water. Financial difficulties are supposed to be the cause of the act. CHRISTCHURCH, April 15. An inquest was held yesterday on the body of Pinching, who died suddenly at Waiau lockup. The post mortem examination showed that death resulted from poisoning by bromide of potassium which deceased presumably took when arrested, as a bottle containing traces of that drug was picked up near where the constable took him. _ The verdict was in accordance with the medical evidence. The Sydenham Borough Council have decided to protest against the Addington Immigration Barracks being transferred into an imbecdo asylum. The Canterbury Rugby Union to-night considered the subject of the North v. South Canterbury match, and decided to recommend that th s match bo played on July 20th. Tbe Ashley Masonic Lodge, 1877 E. 0., at Raiigiora, has signified its intentien of joining the Masonic Union. It is the first Canterbury lodge which Las done so.

Patrick Henderson Millar, aged 60 years, said to bo well connected, committed suicide by taking chlorodyno. Ho left letters saying that holsufforcd from insomnia, not intemperance, brought on merely through hard work. At the inquest on the body of Patrick Henderson Millar the verdict was that death resulted from an overdose of cblorodyne taken by deceased while temporarily insane. Deceased Las a bi'ptjier iu well to do circumstances, whose address is James Millar, Cullen House, Cirencester. He also stated that he had a daughter named Mary, of whom ho wished to hear. There were only a few scraps of food in tho house.
