TIMARU SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

A special meeting of the Committee was held last evening. Present — Messrs John Jackson (Chairman), A, 0. G. Stone, G. Leggett, James Bruce., W. Jones, and J. Hill. COEEESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read From the Education Office re removal of closets, and re schoolmaster’s house. In regard to the latter, the Board declined to allow the house to be inhabited by any one but the schoolmaster. EESIGNATION. Mr Stirling, sixth teacher of the school, forwarded his resignation in consequence of his having received the appointment of second master to the Ashburton public school. Accepted. A letter was received from the Education Office stating that Miss Kissel had not forwarded her resignation. The Committee expressed surprise at the circumstance as, at the last meeting of the Committee, Miss Kissel had given in her resignation verbally and faithfully promised to send in the formal one next day. It was moved :—“ That the Committee recommend the Board of Education that, failing the resignation of Miss Kissel being received, she be dismissed.” EEPOET. The Inspector’s report on the School was discussed. Mr Bruce expressed his opinion that, the report should have been pnt into proper shape , not the results of the department all hashed up. The Chairman expressed the opinion that the Inspector could not be ordered about in that manner. Mr Bruce formally moved—“ That the Inspector, Mr Gurr, be asked to report on the three heads of departments, viz.—the boys, girls and infant, showing the results of each department ; and that this meeting stand adjourned until the same is furnished.”

Mr Hill seconded the motion, observing that he had expected to see the report here, as had been arranged. The motion was held over and some discussion ensued upon the condition of the School, much of which was owing to the neglect of certain teachers, and it was generally agreed that these ought to be removed.

Mr Bruce insisted upon bis motion being put. Mr Gibson opposed the motion, as the report already furnished was as detailed as could be expected. To request the Inspector, over whom the Committee had no authority to re-examine the school or revise his report would be to make the Committee a laughing stock. Mr Leggot moved as an amendment—- “ That owing to the Inspector’s report not being to hand, this meeting stands adjourned to date of next ordinary monthly meeting.” This was seconded by Mr Gibson, and carried by four to two. A QUESTION. Mr Hill enquired whether the girls had been instructed to attach their names to their sewing. If so, he considered a great injustice had been perpetrated. The judges of sewing ought to be in total ignorance of the names of the girls who did the work. No certain information was forthcoming, and the matter dropped. The Chairman reminded members of the approaching distribution of prizes and requested their attendance thereat. The meeting then terminated.
