TIMARU PUBLIC SCHOOL.

ANNUAL BEEAK-UP. The event of the Scholastic year, long looked forward to by the youthful community, has come at last; and the growing excitement of the past few days culminated in the distribution of prizes. The teachers had been busily engaged for some time in making up the prize lists, and preparing the prizes for distribution. The room in which the ceremony took place to-day was very well arranged for the occasion. The prizes had been purchased with the sixty odd pounds netted from the late entertain, ment, and a glance at them showed that the money had been judiciously expended. The gold medals (which cost £3 each) are very beautiful specimens of Mr Credgington’s art, and are well worth competing for. The books are numerous and varied, and while care has been taken to select well-bound and good looking ones, not loss care has been taken to provide books worth reading. Quite a profusion of articles of a most tasteful and useful description has been provided for the girls, comprising costly work-boxes, reticules, purses, sewingbaskets, &c.; and there were a number of extra prizes as detailed below. The Infant department had not been neglected, and a multitude of suitable presents had been got for them. One o’clock was the hour named for the distribution of the infant’s prizes, and at that hour the crowd of gleeful urchins were drafted into the room and presented with the various articles. It had been decided to assemble the Side School scholars and ithe infants, in the Infant Eoom of the Main School and distribute the prizes and presents, in order that the little people might be released from wearisome attendance, and the crowd at the three o’clock distribution of prizes, relieved by the absence of some 200 young children. The little army was accordingly marshalled in the Infant Eoom, and there put through some disciplinary exercises and singing ; after which His Worship the Mayor distributed the prizes. The cheerful demeanour and excellent discipline of the little folks, reflected groat credit on Mrs A- L. Nelson, Mistress of the Side School, and Miss Kippenberger, head of the Infant Department, and their staff, and excited the admiration of the numerous visitors. Tho few kindly, en-

couraging words, addressed by Mr Jackson to the young tolks were quite appreciated by them, possessing as they did, the double merit of brevity and kindliness. One special presentation gave peculiar satisfaction to all—a neat little work-bag presented by Mr Jackson to Nelly Falgar, the little girl of five years who, at the recent school concert, delighted everyone so much by her singing of “ The Blackbird.” After the dismissal of the young people, the visitors beguiled the hour that remained, by an inspection of the rooms in which the needlework, maps, drawings, and copy-books were displayed. The needlework was in great abundance and variety, and it is satisfactory to record that plain-sewing and knitting are not allowed to be quite eclipsed by crewel work and embroidery. The maps (especially on the girls’ side) were excellent. The drawings were also good. A map of the British Isles, by four boys, also attracted a good deal of attention, lu this department the display made this year is really superior to nything before exhibited in the Timaru School.

At three o’clock the doors were opened to the public, and the children were marched to their seats. The tasteful decoration of the apartment was favorably noticed by everyone, and was executed by the female teachers. Mr Jackson, in the double capacity of Mayor of the Borough and Chairman of the School Committee, presided and he was supported by other members of the Committee,

The room was densely crowded, over 700 children occupying the benches. The Chairman, in opening the proceedings, referred to the pleasure experienced on these occasions by both parents and children, and to the great educational advantages enjoyed by the youth of the present. He also addressed a few words of encouragement to the teachers. Touching the official report upon the School, he thought it had been unfairly spoken of outside, and that the real condition of the School was thoroughly good. (Applause.) Mr Gibson joined with the Chairman in congratulating the school teachers, and in reference to the report, expressed his opinion that it was not altogether borne out by the work ; for on inspecting the writing, drawing, &c., he had been thoroughly surprised at their excellence. Ho exhorted the children to increased diligence, and the parents to support the teachers. He thought the schoolmaster did not take the social position which was his due ; and he believed the Education system would soon produce very grand results. (Loud applause.) The ceremony of distributing the prizes was then performed by Mrs Jackson, and after a few congratulatory speeches, the proceedings germinated with the usual cheers and good wishes. PRIZE LIST.
