BIBLE IN SCHOOLS.

Per Press Association. Wellington, Nov. 30. A vigorous and well-reasoned appeal to supporters of the Bible iuschools referendum has been made in Christchurch by Bishop Julius, who answered the suggestion of politicians that party must come first in elections. Addressing the Canterbury branch of the Mothers’ Union, he remarked that they were told it was very wrong, very unpatriotic and goodness knows what else besides, to take one particular thing and put it in front, and that they ought to pnt party in front. He did not ask them to vote for a man who ought not to be in Parliament—a man of bad character, not even if he supported the Bible in Schools. They desired to see a; Parliament cf good men,, honest men, honourable men; but when it came to question not of character, hut of party, then he said New Zealand would not come to utter grief during the next few months, whether the Reform party or the-' Opposition party was at the head of it. It would not do so much harm anyway, if it did not do so much good but it would make a very great difference indeed whether or not religions instruction were given in the schools. (Applause). That was ■ the question not for one year, but for generations to come. He felt sure that if it were subordinated to ' any mortal thing on earth except character, then they would be praying for Bible in'schools, and passing.; resolutions expressing determination to help the movement'forward when they reached 91 years of age, and; with the same amount of success at .. present.
