The act of two mischievous boys in placing some stones on the railway line between Eastbourne and Tnnbridge Wells was nearly responsible for a big railway smash. A passenger train that ran over the jumped the rails and ploughed up the permanent way for a distance of a hundred yards before it was brought to a standstill. The boys were subsequently arrested, and when brought before the police court to-day were ordered to be birched, each, one to receive six strokes. It was shown that after having placed the stones on the railway the young miscreants waited six hours to see the results of their handiwork.
