THE BROKEN HILL STRIKE. United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. Sydney, August 27. The Government has appointed a Board to deal with the Broken Hill strike, WHAT STRIKES COST. Melbourne, August 28. Last quarter £131,008 in wages was lost in Australia through strikes; 8972 persons were directly and 7858 indirectly involved. DUNEDIN TRAMWAY WORKERS Per Press Association. Dunedin, August 28 The Dunedin Tramway Workers’ Union voted by 132 to 18 against joining the United Federation of Labour and the Social Democratic Party, and also resolved by very large majorities against joining either organisation separately BRITISH MINERS. The agenda paper for the annual conference of the Miners’ Federation meeting in October includes a proposal to secure a minimum wage of 7s a day for all miners. THE TRANSPORT WORKERS. At the International Transport Workers’ Conference, Mr Havelock Wilson denied that there were splits in the Seamen’s Unionn, but said that men had been expelled who were believed to be in the pay of the Shipping Federation. He stated that the seamen would have no chance of success in a strike unless they had £150,000 in their treasury. THE LONDON BAKERS. Received August 29, 9 a.m. London, August 28. The operative bakers resorted to a lightning strike. They downed tools and picketed the shops and announced that no bread would be baked without an agreement for a nine hours day, including the meal hour and a weekly wage of S4s with exclusive employment of unionists. Their demands were immediately granted.
