ROAD WORKS IN FRANKLIN

Tho County Engineer ("Mr J. F. McArthur) presented the following 1 report at last Thursday's meeting of the Franklin County Council, viz.:

Proposed Road Works.— Engineering surveys have been made and plans prepared for proposed works on the following roads, viz. : Southern access road to Helvetia Station ; Northern access road to Helvetia Station : Patumahoe to Railway Station Road ; Karaka to Waiau Road ; Caie's Road, Maungatawhiri Valley ; MaungatawhiriMaramarua Road : Maungatawhiri to Mangatangi at " Enoch's " ; Redefined old Survey Hakgill's Road ; Re defined old survey Waiuku to Drury Road at " Cuff's " ; Halt' Chain Road, Harrisville to Razorhack.

Works in Progress— Arrangements have been made with the different Foremen throughout the County for the construction of roads, which are in most cases being carried out with Council plant and hired teams. Metalling has been carried out on a number of roads and the same is at present in a number of localities in progress. Portable Crushing Plant.—The crushing plant has been engaged on the Drury to Tuakau Main Road and is now carrying out crushing operations in the Bombay District. Hauling Plant.—The hauling plant has baen engaged carting metal from the Karaka Quarry to tho Karaka Papakura Road, but owing to wet weather very poor progress has been made. It will now be impracticable this season further hauling in this locality.

Teams' Plant.—The teams' plant has been engaged forming the Waiau to Papakura road and is now engaged in the Waiau District reforming and improving the roads. Mercer Quarry.—Owing to the shortage of labour and railway trucks some delay has been caused in supply of metal. There is, how ever, a large quantity of spawls quarried and on hand. Crushing operations will commence and the delivery of metal will be resumed when the necessary rolling stock is available.
