MARIONETTES ENTERTAIN

PRESENTATION AT PUTARURU Unusual and extremely fascinating entertainment was enjoyed by a goodsized audience in the Civic Theatre, Futaruru, last week, when a presentation, sponsored by the Putaruru Community Art Service Committee, was given by the Goodwin Marionette Ti;..me. -wo plays were performed by the mai -onettes, ' one a comedy, “ The Reluctant Dragon,” and the other Shakespeare's “ The Tempest.” Both were excellent. The tiny figures, beautifully dressed, appeared almost lifelike in their actions, and the engaging antics of the dog in the comedy drew rounds of laughter as it faithfully portrayed the inquisitiveness and ways of a pet canine. The stage scenes and the clever and attractive lighting gave a most impressive effect and added much to the success of the plays. The presentation was thoroughly enjoyed, as was proved by the long and warm applause accorded throughout.

Mr. A. M. Shanks, president of the Futaruru Community Art Service Committee, thanked the Goodwin Marionette Theatre for its performance and the audience for its attendance. He also announced that the Australian singer Clement Q. Williams would he the next artist to appear in Putaruru. A concert by him is to be given early in July. Approximately 800 children, from the Putaruru and surrounding district schools, attended matinees of the marionette performance throughout the day.
