The fortnightly cards party held by the Putaruru Scout Group last week was a splendid success. The winners were Mrs. Maxwell and Mr. R. Rolfe.
Shipments of candles should arrive from Canada within a week or two, said the Minister of Supply (Mr. Nordmeyer) when revealing that licenses had been issued for their importation- He said power cuts had created an abnormal demand for candles which it was impossible to meet immediately. A further shipment of wax, which would enable New Zealand manufacturers to carry on for some considerable time, was due within a few days, he said, and shipments of a crude scale wax were expected towards the end of the month.
Experience of recent sittings augured well for the effective administration of the onerous task before the Commission, stated the chairman of the Local Government Commission, Mr. Justice Goldstine. The Commission had gone thoroughly into its work, and among the numerous problems that had been discussed was that of the effective administration of the Rabbit Nuisance Act, particularly the working of rabbit boards. This inquiry had not been completed, but in view of the urgency of the problem, especially as it concerned soil erosion, the issue was being actively pursued.
