WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

EAST WAIKATO EXECUTIVE The Putaruru branch of the Women’s Division, Federated Farmers, was- hostess at the lunch for delegates' of the East Waikato Provincial Council at its meeting held recently, when all branches were •represented with the exception of Waotu, which had found it necessary to go into recess in- the meantime, but hopes to become active again in the not too distant future. Mrs. X). Watkins presided over the meeting, and regretfully tabled the resignation of the secretary, Mrs. W. Allen, who owing to ill health found it impossible to carry on. Correspondence from headquarters was read, and dealt mainly with W the forthcoming conference and the opening of the headquarters building in Grant Street, Wellington. Two properties in Auckland had been inspected hut proved unsuitable for a rest home. However, another property was under consideration, and a full discussion on it was to take place at the Auckland interprovincial conference to be held this month, when delegates {-cm East tWarkato would be present. Mrs. J. Campbell, housekeeping -secretary, reported that nine positions had been filled by the housekeeper during the quarter. Members’ attention- was drawn to the dangers involved by children -alighting from school buses in- busy thoroughfares. It was decided to -write to the A.AjA., and also to the Minister of Transport, through the Dominion secretary, on the matter. Delegates were also asked to approach local school committees to get them to move in some direction in the matter. The annual meeting was then held, and the • president’s report and the annual balance-sheet were read and adopted. The latter showed a vary sound financial position. Mrs. J. Campbell’s housekeeping -report showed that 28 positions had been filled by the housekeepers, only four "being in non-memibers’ homes. Five positions were filled by the junior housekeeper, and in all 104 children had been cared for -by the Women’s Division housekeepers throughout the year. The election of officers followed. Mrs. Watkins declined re-nomina-tion as president, stating that though she had enjoyed the work immensely she was of the opinion that the various positions should go round all the branches. The election resulted in almost a new set of officers, they being as follows: President, Mrs. Coates (Ngakura); vicepresidents, Mrs. Watkins (Ti-rau), Mrs. Green (Tikitere), Mrs. Kinnear (Tirau); secretary, Mrs. Mar tin (Ngon-gotaha); treasurer, Mrs. L. Campbell (Reporoa); housekeeping secretary, Mrs. J. Campbell (Tokoroa); press reporter, Mrs. F. Flavall (Tc-koroa). The retiring president thanked all those who had helped her through the past year, and expressed the wish that the new president would have the same loyal support, and wished her much happiness in the work she had undertaken. Afternoon tea served- by Puta.ruru andi Tokoroa members brought the meeting to a close.
