EXPLOSIVES USED ON RIVER

SERIOUS OFFENCE F. J. Pickramg, olf Putaruru, was charged before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., in the Putaruru Magistrate’s Court on Monday on two l counts, firstly, that at the Waihou River, Putaruru, he did take from the rivet acclimatised fish, he not being "the holder of a license; and, secondly, that he did use an explosive substance to caticb fish in the Waihou River. iMif. J.- Grahame, representing defendant, pleaded guilty to both charges. Constable T. Cotter stated that on March 9 defendant, with a party of friends, went to the Waihou River. During the afternoon he fired five or six shots .of gelignite in the river, and as a result collected about 15 fish. The Acclimatisation Society regarded the matter as a serious one. The Magistrate commented that it was a very serious 1 offence, and imposed a fine of £lO, and 10s costs, on defendant for using an explosive, and ordered him to pay 10s costs for no,t having a license. H. E. Garlick was charged that he did l aid in the unlawful commission of an offence, the unlawful taking of fish from the Waihou River by the use of an explosive substance. Garlick pleaded l guilty."" Constable Cotter stated defendant was a member of the party, and although he did not assist in the use of the explosives, he had taken part in the collection of the fish killed. Garlick was convicted and fined 10s and 10s costs.
