Canon K. A. Karaka, of Morrinsville, has been appointed Archdeacon of Te Tau Hauaaru and superintendent of the Waikato Diocesan Maori Mission. The maximum timber levy under the Act of id per 100 feet was again imposed by the Matamata County Council on Thursday. The levy is collected on all timber cut and carted within the county boundaries. Mr. J. H. Gaddes, of Morrinsville, has been appointed to the council of northern affiliated agricultural and pastoral associations. Mr. W. Kanstead (Matangi) has been appointed one of the delegates to the annual conference of the lioyal Society. The first lambs of the season to be reported are from the farm of Mr. C. Alien, at Tirau. The first was dropped a fortnight ago, and to date eight Dorset Horn ewes have given birth to 16 lambs, making a 200 per cent, tally.

The Department of Lands and Survey has advised the Matamata County Council that approval has been given to the four acres at Okauia being reserved for recreation purposes and suggesting that it be called the Okauia Domain. The suggestion was approved by the council.

The May meeting of the Matamata County Council was one of the longest for many years if indeed a record was not set up. A couple of big deputations, an address on the Tokoroa town plan, and consideration. of the estimates, combined with the usual routine business, kept councilors hard at it from lO.l.'Ua.m. till 5.15 p.m-
