PUBLIC SCHOOL LIBRARY

SUGGESTION BY HEADMASTER An uAsuccessful plea was made by the headmaster, Mr. R. G. Hutton, at Monday. evening’s meeting of the Putaruru District High School Committee, for the balance at the end of the committee’s year to be spent on library books for the school.

“ The secretary will soon present his annual balance-sheet,” said Mr. Hutton in his report. “ In past years it appears to have been the policy of each committee to show at the end of the year a substantial credit balance. In my opinion this is a mistake. If the committee presents a credit balance, how can it justify the letter of protest against a reduced allowance from the department to secondary pupils, forwarded earlier in the year. I suggest that the’ amount that remains after settling all accounts be expended ( in library books. That is allowed under the regulations. Books are needed, particularly in the infant and secondary departments,” he 'concluded.

“ The credit balance at the end of the past, few years has been about £10,” said the secretary, Mr. A. Anderson. “ I have said we need to conserve money. We need it particularly in the winter. If we want library books the dance to be held by the staff can go for them.” “ The regulations state that we can buy library books with the balance,” repeated Mr.. Hutton., Mr. Anderson: If we do not start the new committee off with £lO or £l2 it will be “ in the cart ” immediately. Although we. show a credit balance on the statement it will be utilised immediately on the new committee’s operations.

The headmaster said he was only suggesting the plan if the money was available. “ Children are learning to read so quickly nowadays,” he stated later. “ Some infant pupils have to read the same book for several weeks.”

The matter was not proceeded with.
