VALEDICTORY.
MR. H. J. PEARSE. A very pleasant function took place at the Putaruru post office last Tuesday, when the members of the post and telegraph staff assembled to bid Mr. and Mrs. Pearse farewell and Godspeed on the eve of their departure for Otaki. On behalf of the members of the staff Mr. Treloar stated that he (and he knew that he voiced the sentiments of all officers present) felt this parting very keenly indeed, and that they deeply regretted that such an occasion had arisen, as Mr. Pearse’s sterling qualities as a man and his absolute impartiality and kindness as a boss had endeared him very much to them all. He went on to say that, however, their loss was Otaki’s gain, and that they trusted that he would find his new post a congenial one. On behalf of the staff he asked Mr. and Mrs. Pearse to accept a silver-mounted oaken biscuit barrel and butter dish, suitably inscribed, as a token of the high esteem in which they are both held, and trusted it would.serve to remind them of the kindly sentiments that they had engendered in the hearts and minds of all present. Mr. Pearse, who was visibly* affected, thanked them on behalf of Mrs. Pearse and himself for their kindly words and the beautiful present. Mr. Pearse assured them that such a token was not necessary to remind him of their grand, unselfish co-operation, particularly during the last three strenuous years, and that it vas with very deep regret that he r Mrs. Pearse had to leave such a splendid lot of fellows. Three hearty cheers then given for Mr. and Mrs. Pearse, and the assemblage dispersed.
