MOKAI.
A number of local residents journeyed by car to Rotorua to see the Royal visitors last week end, and had a very enjoyable trip, despite the inclement weather. On the road to Tolcaanu the Duke and Duchess halted for tea at Wairekai) and received a hearty welcome from a large gathering there. The members of the Golf Club are working hard getting the links into better condition. A good deal of clearing and levelling has been done, and two greens have been dug up and fenced, preparatory to being levelled and put down in new grass. A stroke competition held recently for prizes donated by Messrs. W. A. Marshall and J. H. Taylor was won by Mrs. Law (ladies) and Mr. E. A. Taylor (men’s).
A very unpleasant experience befell a lorry load of local people while returning from a picnic to the Waikato river a fortnight ago. When crossing a narrow filling some two miles from Mokai the sides of the road gave way, with the result that the lorry ran down the bank and overturned, throwing the 19 passengers out. Fortunately, the ground being soft, nobody was badly hurt, although all were shaken and several received bruises, etc. The road at this point is hardly wide enough for a vehicle to cross the filling, and improvements are urgently needed before a more serious accident occurs. Owing to the continued depression in the sawmilling industry the company’s mills and bush are still working short time— work being carried out on four days per week. Although the weather has turned warm again after the rain of last week several frosts lately have played havoc with local gardens, cutting down all such crops as potatoes, beans and pumpkins.
